Contract shows SEPA confidence in Flygt

ITT Flygt has supplied new data logging equipment as part of a contract to the Scottish Water Environment Protection Agency (SEPA).

Scotland’s environmental regulator and adviser wanted to update several hundred data logging outstations, some of which were up to 30-years-old.

While replacing them with more modern units, SEPA wanted to retain much of its existing instrumentation and communications infrastructure.

ITT Flygt’s Monitoring & Control Division secured a contract to supply replacement units, and recommended its D7141 outstation. It also provided consultancy to SEPAs top end supplier, including sharing product expertise, which helped ensure a smooth completion of the protocol driver.

Having been invited to tender last December, Flygt submitted a pre-qualification questionnaire in January, followed by its tender in February. The contract was awarded in March after a series of technical negotiations.

Andrew Welsh, Sales and Service Manager - Monitoring and Control Division, said: “SEPA required equipment functionality, which our D7141 outstation was able to provide, and on time delivery. That, coupled with the long-standing relationship we have with SEPA, meant it had a great deal of confidence in our ability to deliver.

“It was important because SEPA had to know that we could supply the units in the tight timescale we were operating in.”

A SEPA spokesman said: “We are currently modernising our hydrological monitoring network by replacing a significant number of data logging outstations and associated instrumentation, much of which has now reached the end of its economic and operational life cycle. The overall objective of the replacement programme is to provide SEPA with an up-to-date monitoring network, capable of future expansion and of supporting SEPAs requirements well into the future.

“The upgraded network will continue to support SEPAs hydrological operational requirements and will feed data to the recently installed Hydrology Information Management System (HIMS) and the Flood Early Warning System (FEWS).

“SEPA has selected replacement equipment from major suppliers on the basis of cost and proven operational capabilities. The programme involves changing data logging equipment, raingauge and river level instrumentation, and is expected to be completed by the end of this autumn.”

The Flygt outstations have already proved to be cost effective, and suited SEPAs criteria of low power technology, a range of different instrumentation inputs, and having the latest technology.

The D7141 is part of the D714x family, a range of IP65/IP67 low-power data logger/telemetry outstations, and is dc-powered. Its small size and range of capabilities make it ideally suited to a myriad of applications in the utilities and industrial markets.

SEPA currently operates an extensive hydrological monitoring network, which measures rainfall, river levels, tidal levels and borehole levels. It is Scotland’s environmental regulator and adviser, responsible to the Scottish Parliament, and as well as controlling pollution it works with others to protect and improve the environment.
